In line with the NSP’s objectives and global targets, IMRO carried out HIV/AIDS prevention interventions among key populations, mainly FSWs and MSM, in the districts of Muhanga, Ruhango, and Nyamasheke. This work was supported by the RBC-SPIU Global Fund TB & Malaria 2018-2020. According to the NSP, prevention efforts focus on priority groups identified by the MOT exercise: serodiscordant couples (SDCs), FSWs and their clients, vulnerable youth (particularly young women aged 15–24), and MSM. Each group has a minimum package of services addressing their specific needs.
Specific interventions for FSWs and MSM included:
- Peer education for FSWs and MSM addresses the problem of gender-based violence to which they are particularly vulnerable.
- Targeted STI screening and HIV counseling and treatment (HCT) for FSWs and MSM in hotspots.
- Targeted sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services for pregnant FSWs.
- Advocacy with law enforcement and local authorities to improve the enabling environment and protection of FSWs and MSM, focusing on accessing HIV, TB, and health services.
- Strengthening the participation of FSWs and MSM in policy development and program implementation.
- Reducing the socio-economic vulnerability of sex workers by encouraging FSWs to create associations and cooperatives.
